At age 13 and with only Everest and Vinson left to go; Californian Jordan Romero wants to become the youngest 7summiteer.
The youngest Everest record holder is Nepalese Mingkipa Sherpani who in 2003 summited Everest at age 15 together with her slightly older sister Lhakpa (in her third Everest summit). The girls went via Tibet, since Nepal bans climbers under 16.
Meanwhile on Everest north side, the Romeros reached C2 today in a full-throttle summit push with Saturday or Sunday as possible summit days. Jordan's location can be tracked on his website via SPOT.
Jordan climbs on the unrestricted north side. Other countries have age limits as well: Jordan's parents had to get permit from a judge in Argentina to climb Aconcagua, restricted to climbers under 14.
Jordan climbs with dad Paul Romero and his partner Karen Lundgren. They use O2 and Sherpa support but are unguided. Jordan’s age has divided armchair warriors: some question the adults’ responsibility and experience, others see the quest as an inspiring example for teens.
