The Bernese Mountain Dog is a large breed of dog, one of the four breeds of Sennenhund-type dogs from the Swiss Alps, called in Swiss German the Berner Sennenhund. The name Sennenhund is derived from the German "Senne" (alpine pasture) and "hund" (dog), as they accompanied the alpine herders and dairymen called Senn. Berner refers to the area of the breed's origin, in the Canton of Berne in Switzerland.
The Bernese Mountain Dog normally 24-28 inches (61-71cm.)High and Bitches 23-27 inches (58-69cm.) Dogs 85-110 pounds (38-50kg.) Bitches 80-105 pounds (36-48kg.) in weight. They owns the pattern of silky hairs with a strikingly black colour. They have deep tan markings on all four legs, spots above the forelegs, at chest and over each eye together with white feet. The tan colouration on each foreleg must always be between the black and white colour.
