The explosions Sunday occurred at a rugby club and an Ethiopian restaurant in Kampala, Uganda, where people were watching the World Cup. An American worker was reportedly killed in the blasts, and several other Americans were wounded.
"We will carry out attacks against our enemy wherever they are," said Sheik Ali Mohamud Rage, a militant spokesman in Mogadishu. "No one will deter us from performing our Islamic duty." After claiming responsibility Monday for twin bombings in Uganda.
"At this time we can confirm that one American has been killed," said an embassy official.
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni said those behind the attacks were cowards. "If you want to fight, why don't you attack soldiers or military installations instead of fighting innocent people watching football?" Museveni said while visiting one of the blast sites today. "We shall go for them wherever they are coming from. We will look for them and get them as we always do."
"We were watching soccer here and then when there were three minutes to the end of the match an explosion came ... and it was so loud," witness Juma Seiko told Reuters. "After the first blast, which occurred slightly on the sidelines of the crowded area, many people ducked under their chairs, some lying down and using the chairs as shelter. Barely a minute later, I heard the second blast, right in the middle of the crowd. It was more ear-piercing and louder".
