After graduating from the theatre program at the University of Oklahoma, Harris headed to Hollywood, where, in 1983, he first attained critical acclaim as astronaut John Glenn in The Right Stuff. Since then, he's appeared year in and year out in major movies and stage plays.

Although nominated four times for an Academy Award (The Hours, Pollock, The Truman Show and Apollo 13), Harris has yet to win the coveted Oscar. In addition to playing the title role in Pollock (2000), the movie also marked Harris's debut as a director.

The new millennium found Harris' labor of love, the artist biopic Pollock, seeing the light of day after nearly a decade of development. Spending years painting and researching the modernist painter, Harris carefully and lovingly oversaw all aspects of the film, including directing, producing, and starring in the title role.
