MTS Oceanos sinking is one of biggest calamities in the history of South Africa. This disastrous incident took place on 3 August, 1991. The Oceanos started its journey from East London for Durban, South Africa which was its ultimate destination. The weather conditions were not favorable and there were 30 feet high waves striking the ship mercilessly. The stormy wind was blowing with a speed of 40 knots per hour.

MTS Oceanos sinking is one of biggest calamities in the history of South Africa. This disastrous incident took place on 3 August, 1991. The Oceanos started its journey from East London for Durban, South Africa which was its ultimate destination. The weather conditions were not favorable and there were 30 feet high waves striking the ship mercilessly. The stormy wind was blowing with a speed of 40 knots per hour.
According to normal plan, a “sail away” party was to be celebrated on the deck but, due to these turbulaent weather conditions, it was celebrated in Four Seasons lounge. The part comprised the musical performance of Moss and Tracy Hills. But as the stormy weather maintained its relentlessness, the party could not last longer and all the passengers decided to go to their cabins.
With the passage of time the weather conditions exacerbated. The dinner was just started to be served and waiters were feeling difficulty in holding trays. The ship was experiencing severe jolts and it was dangling like a sea-saw.
Then everything started to slide down on one side of the ship. It was that side of the ship that had gone under the water due to imbalance. All the articles such as plates and cutlery started to slide down the table.
