Hundreds of stranded passengers who had been sleeping on cots as they waited for word on flights to Europe began to see some movement Monday as airlines scheduled takeoffs from New York City.
A KLM flight from Amsterdam arrived at John F. Kennedy International Airport at 10:50 p.m. Monday night.
"Everyone was screaming in the airplane from happiness," said Savvas Toumarides, of Cypress, who missed his sister's New York wedding after getting stranded in Amsterdam last Thursday. He said the worst part was "waiting and waiting and not knowing."
Some passengers were able to check in for KLM and Lufthansa flights that were to depart. As they waited in line, they were given a note from KLM apologizing for the disruptions.
During her first four days living in an airport, Dominica Zschiesche cleaned her body with hand wipes and used a public bathroom sink to shave her legs and wash her hair.
But by Day 5 at Camp Kennedy, she seemed almost at home, standing near the concourse barefoot and with her hair wrapped in a blue towel after she finally got to shower.
"It was wonderful. It was the best shower I ever had," said the 29-year-old art student from Frankfurt.
Hundreds of passengers are stranded at John F. Kennedy International Airport while they wait for the volcanic ash cloud over Europe to clear and flights to resume. They were doing the best they could in the stuffy, smelly space.
NASA and Google Earth shows the updates and latest picture of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano. Over 500 people had been evacuated since the outbreak of the said volcano. Many airports in Europe are close so the flight was cancelled. The volcano’s condition is getting worst since the last outburst of it couple of days ago. Which cause a big impact to the citizens and millions of business in Europe.
