Asian Carp

A bighead Asian carp was found in Lake Calumet, the first discovered above the electric barrier system designed by the Army Corps of Engineers to prevent the fish from entering the Great Lakes.

There are many species of heavy-bodied cyprinid fishes collectively known in the US as Asian carp. Heavy-bodied cyprinids from the subcontinent (for example Catla Catla catla and mrigal Cirrhinus cirrhosus) are not included in this classification and are known collectively as "Indian Carp".

"The threat to the Great Lakes depends on how many have access to the lakes, which depends on how many are in the Chicago waterway right now," said John Rogner, assistant director of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. The 34.6-inch, 19.6-pound bighead carp was discovered about six miles between Lake Michigan and the T.J. O'Brien Lock and Dam during regular samplings taken by an Illinois Department of Natural Resources contracted commercial fisherman.
