Jun. 11--As a midnight strike deadline looms, Spirit Airlines and its pilots have less than 24 hours to avoid a showdown that would have scant impact on most of the nation's travelers, but could take a severe toll on Broward County.
With about 150 daily flights, Spirit dominates few airports, but at Fort Lauderdale it accounts for nearly one in five passengers and employs nearly 1,300 people.
“When we started negotiating, this pilot group was certain that the process would result in a fair contract,” said Capt. Sean Creed, chairman of the Spirit pilots union, in a news release. “However, management’s refusal to abide by our current contract, followed by a demand for $5.3 million in concessions while announcing expansion plans, has destroyed this confidence and forged the unity demonstrated by this vote.”
