Lorena Bobbit is the Ecuadorian woman who is now widely known because of her reaction to years of physical, mental and sexual abuse. After the Lorena Bobbit story, feminists and women’s rights groups rallied to defend her. The Bobbit case was one of the first few scandalous incidents that brought about discussion and a name for “marital rape”. Rappers still bring her up in their lyrics and comedians still seem to find a “humorous” side to the story. Although Lorena Bobbit became very famous within pop culture, her story as it relates to womens’ rights is very real and important.
When people think of Lorena Bobbit, they seldom envision a 19 year old girl from Ecuador who married a man 3 years her senior. Even more seldom would ideas of physical abuse and blatant infidelity come to mind. The interesting and twisted reality of the Lorena Bobbit case remains that she was initially demonized for having committed a heinous crime. Although her reaction may have not been preceded by other similar events, Lorena was severely abused by her husband, which led to clinical depression and potentially post-traumatic stress disorder. I assume that Lorena felt alone, isolated, and trapped in her marriage.
At the timeshe castrated her husband, she was only 23. She had been married for only four years and lived in Manassas, VA. On June 23, 1993, Lorena reports that her husband John Wayne Bobbit came home inebriated and raped her. During the night, Lorena went to the kitchen for a glass of water where she noticed a carving knife. Upon seeing the knife, it is said that Lorena had flashbacks from years of abuse, infidelity, and even a forced abortion. She took the knife and severed almost half of his penis. She then took the penis and drove to an open field and threw it out of her truck window. The penis was relocated and reattached after a nine hour surgery performed by Dr. James T. Sehn and Dr. David Berman.
Curiously, Lorena Bobbit was found “not guilty” due to “insanity” instead of “self-defense”. If John Wayne’s penis was the object that he used to abuse her, why couldn’t she be found not guilty because of self-defense? He continuously raped her and subjected her to abuse that several witnesses corroborated during the trial. I think that finding her not guilty due to insanity is another mark of the unfair treatment of women because of hegemonic male sexual structures. She was sentenced to a 45-day treatment at a mental health facility for evaluation. I understand that something had to be done but John Wayne walked away from this case relatively unscathed.. He was abusing her body for years and was still acquitted of charges of spousal rape in 1994. Does that seem remotely unfair to anybody else but me?
Over the past 17 years, people have exploited the Lorena Bobbit case. Immediately following her trial, there was a “Bobbitmania” where women were simulating the actions of the abused Lorena. Since then, Lorena has gone by her maiden name to steer clear of tabloids. She has officially establish the Lorena Red Wagon organization to help prevent domestic violence with family-oriented activities. Personally, I suspect that this project didn’t begin until 3 years ago in order to let the public consciousness fade away from the case.
