Lulu White [Lulu Hendley] was a brothel madam, procuress and entrepreneur in New Orleans, Louisiana during the Storyville period.

Lulu White’s Saloon was owned by its namesake, Lulu White, and located at 237 Basin Street. Lulu White was an infamous madam of a brothel during the Storyville era. She was also a known criminal, as well as an entrepreneur of sorts, with many failed business ventures in her lifetime. She was born in Alabama but often told people that she had immigrated from the West Indies. She was part black and had some affluence for a woman of mixed-race in her era. White was known for her vast jewelry collection. It was known as an 'Octoroon Parlor' meaning that all of the
girls working there were light-skinned African Americans of mixed racial descent. The four-story house reportedly cost $40,000 to build (about $1 million in 2008 dollars). In 1929, the structure sold for $11,000.

Lulu White actually lived between California and Louisiana from 1906, on, because she had financial difficulties. [4] Still, she managed to run her saloon and brothel while making trips between the two states, up until the time that Storyville was closed down. Mahogany Hall was destroyed in 1949. One major change in the original structure was that the second floor collapsed during Hurricane Betsy in the 1960s. Still, it stands today as a reminder of a time when many vices were legalized and people caroused late into the evenings, enjoying the vast opportunities any night could bring. “Currently a historical marker on the neutral ground of Basin Street is the only visible connection to Alderman Sidney Story’s experiment in legalized prostitution."
