"I’d always just drawn comics since I was a kid. In 8th grade I did a daily strip called “Live it Like Me” that was loosely autobiographical. After my freshman year of high school I was just so excited about everything that had happened, and I had discovered this comic called Deep Girl by Ariel Bordeaux. She wrote autobiographical stories about sex and drugs and being a shitty waitress. That inspired me to write a comic that was more explicit than what I’d been doing before. All of my influences before had been comics in the newspaper. By finding her comic I
realized I could do a comic and it could include all these amazing things that happened to me my freshman year of high school, which basically involved making out with people and doing drugs, information that I wanted to share because it was very new and very exciting. "
While attending high school in Berkeley, California, Schrag self-published her first comic series, Awkward, depicting events from her freshman year, originally selling copies to friends and family. Slave Labor Graphics subsequently reprinted Awkward as a graphic novel, followed by three more books based on her next three years of school: Definition, Potential, and Likewise. The books were republished by Touchstone/Simon & Schuster in 2008 and 2009. The books tell stories of family life, going to concerts, experimenting with drugs, high school crushes, and coming out as a bisexual and later as a lesbian.
When she asked a question about losing the virginity she replied:
" I’m really okay in the end at how it turned out. I don’t really have any regrets about it because I think I would have always been curious. Even though I was really attracted to my girlfriend and was really happy to be in a relationship with her, I think I would have always been curious about what sex with a boy was like and I think I would have done it eventually, so I might as well have done it in this classic virginity losing escapade. But if I had a teenage gay girl cousin who came to me with that question, I would definitely tell her you do not need to be in any rush to have sex with a boy. If you have sex with a girl it can count as losing your virginity. I think it just becomes this becomes an issue for teenagers because of the societal focus the concept of virginity. Because you want to make sure that you’ve fulfilled that. But once you’ve past that, it kind of becomes a non-issue. "
