Heather Amy Matarazzo (born November 10, 1982) is an American actress. Her breakthrough role was as a geeky girl in the film Welcome to the Dollhouse (1995). he grew up in Long Island, NY with her parents. She began acting at an early age and played the role of Helen Keller in a regional theater.
Heather Matarazzo is openly lesbian. On July 31, 2008, Matarazzo's publicist announced that Matarazzo was engaged to Carolyn Murphy. She was the keynote speaker at the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network of Boston's annual conference. In an interview with the New York Daily News she said,
"I met the person I'm so madly crazy in love with. She's not famous yet. She will be. She wants to do musical theater and stage, which is not as demoralizing as the movie business is." By casually mentioning her partner's gender, Matarazzo took a huge step and subtly announced to the world, "I am a lesbian."
In an interview with Bay Windows, Heather Matarazzo said, "For me I'd always known I liked women, I'd always known it as long as I could remember... [but] I never really knew the name for it... But when I was doing "Welcome to the Dollhouse" and that scene where they're like, 'Lesbo! Lesbo!' and I finally found out what lesbian meant, I was like, 'Actually, yeah, I am a lesbian.'"
She further said,
"It was one of the most freeing experiences of my life, in that it gave me a sense of, wow, now I can fully be a part of the gay and lesbian community, and I don't have to be on the outskirts,".
